Yesterday, Today, or Tomorrow. Which is it?

All we have is today. Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow may not be ours. It’s today or it’s nothing.

And God is in our today. He is I Am. He was I Am when yesterday was today. He will be I Am when tomorrow becomes today. He was there when those hard and/or beautiful things happened in the past. He will be there for whatever lies ahead. Actually, He is already there, because He is I Am. And He is in the Eternal Present Tense.

Recently, someone assured me when I was agonizing about my daughter moving with her husband and 4 little ones because of a military transfer, that God is already there. And of course, He was and is! But all of this gets lost in our regrets or nostalgia over the past or our anxiety over or our excitement for the future.

What we usually do in our today is fight it or forget it or just get through it. “After things settle down,” we say. But we often like to think of the good ole days of the past. Remember the Beatles song. “Yesterday”? “All our trouble seemed so far away…” Yeh, right! But those troubles were very real when yesterday was today. And God was there then!

And then there’s the song from Annie, “Tomorrow.” I can’t help loving the song because my sweet, 5 year old grandson used to sing it to me.  “Tomorrow, tomorrow, I love ya, tomorrow, you’re always a day away.” And now there’s even a commercial using the song to promote a medication to help a senior see another tomorrow. It’s all in God’s hands, isn’t it? But He has given us today.

So we need to embrace our today; embrace the real life we have today, not the life we wish we had.  We need to not miss our God in our here and now. We need to not miss our loved ones and ourselves and the precious friends and even strangers God may send our way.  What a tragedy if we do!

Friends, let’s not miss our today.

Project:

Just for fun, why not compare the lyrics of these songs and see what you think.

Yesterday (Beatles)

Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away.
Now it looks as though they're here to stay.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly I'm not half the man I used to be.
There's a shadow hanging over me.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Why she had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Why she had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Tomorrow (Annie)

The sun will come out
Tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar
That tomorrow
There'll be sun!

Just thinkin' about
Tomorrow
Clears away the cobwebs,
And the sorrow
'Til there's none!
When I'm stuck with a day
That's grey,
And lonely,
I just stick out my chin
And Grin,
And Say,
Oh

The sun will come out
Tomorrow
So ya gotta hang on
'Til tomorrow
Come what may

Tomorrow!
Tomorrow!
I love ya
Tomorrow!
You're always
A day
Away!

Today is Mine  (Glenn Campbell)

When the sun came up this morning, I took the time to watch it rise
And as its beauty struck the darkness from the sky
I thought how small and unimportant all my troubles seem to be
And how lucky another day belongs to me
And as the sleepy world around me woke up to greet the day
All its silent beauties seemed to say
So what my friend, if all your dreams you haven't realized
Just look around you, you've got a whole new day to try
Today is mine, today is mine to do with what I will
Today is mine, my own special cup to fill
To die a little that I might learn to live, to take from life that I might learn to give
Today is mine

Like most men I cursed the present, void of peace of mind
And raise my thoughts beyond tomorrow, envision there a sweeter time
But as I view this day around me, I can see the fool I've been
For today's the only garden we can tendToday is mine...
