Nothing Too Small for His Love

And may you have the power to understand, …
how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.

May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully.
Ephesians 3:20 NLT

Have you ever assumed that God is too busy to be concerned about the small things in your life? After all, He has the entire universe and the world of people’s huge problems to attend to?

Well, years ago while a student at Moody Bible Institute, I learned otherwise. I asked God for a banana for a specific event, and the very next day, He gave me my banana in a very unlikely way.

And it was during those student days in the married students dorm at MBI that I came across this quote that I have never forgotten:

Nothing is too great for His almighty Power.
Nothing is too small for His LOVE.*
Corrie ten Boom

So that little yellow banana said “I love you” to my soul from my Father God.

Well, this week, God totally knocked my socks off, proving that nothing is too “small” in my life for Him to show His love for me. This is what was going on — I was preparing for our daughter in law Cortney’s birthday gift. We already had an awesome card:

This card was so perfect for Cortney for several reasons:

  • Cortney is surrounded by males — Jeremy her husband, Evan & Carter her sons, and even 2 male dogs (ok, and one female dog but she doesn’t count in this illustration).

  • I’m known for my muffins and often do a muffin drop at their home for our two grandsons.

  • Cortney is the reigning queen of the household. She is beautiful, sensitive, delicate, and needing gluten free baked goods to keep her health on an even keel.

So the quirky idea I had was to replicate the imagery of the card with a big beautiful gluten free cupcake in the middle of a tray and surround the cupcake (a.k.a. Cortney) with muffins of various types to represent her boys — chocolate chip (Carter’s favorite); pumpkin chocolate chip (Evan’s favorite); lemon (Jeremy’s and Carter’s 2nd favorite).

A couple days before the birthday dinner, off we went to find The Neighborhood Nest, a gluten free bakery in a neighboring town. Oh, the gf cupcakes were beautiful and yummy — chocolate (of course), vanilla raspberry, and cherry chip. I couldn’t decide, and they were SMALL! So we got all three.

Then on to Hobby Lobby to find a tray and wrapping paper among other items on our list. As I was making my way around the store to pick up the various items, I was grieving at the smallness of Cortney’s gf cupcakes. I was thinking,

“One cupcake will look dwarfed in the midst of the muffins.
I suppose I could put all three, but that isn’t really the imagery of the card.”

I pretty much resigned myself to doing the best we could with the cupcakes and tray, when I turned the corner into the next aisle. I was dumbfounded … speechless …awestruck!

This is what I saw … NO JOKE!

There in the middle of the aisle … on the FLOOR … was a big, gorgeous CUPCAKE!!!!

At first I didn’t move … what? where? who?

When I finally “came to,” I rolled my cart up to it, picked it up, turned it over, and guess what it said.

“Cupcake Box!” CUPCAKE BOX!

I opened it and realized the three gf cupcakes would fit perfectly in that beautifully decorated, just the right size, Cupcake Box.

O Jesus, You are too funny! You are too awesome! You are too Loving — over the top. Truly, nothing is too small … and I didn’t even ASK! I just thought but couldn’t have imagined how you could love me so perfectly today … and also love dear Cortney who will now be able to see the metaphor of the card and her glorious life with her wonderful men all around her.

I continued my shopping feeling 10 feet off the ground with pure JOY!

And of course, I turned another corner and found the perfect tray for the cupcake box in the middle and muffins all around:

And so on the big day, it was double delight to bring Cortney her card and present and tell her the amazing story of God shopping with us at Hobby Lobby and showing us His love in such a joy and delight-filled way.

All glory to You, O God …even before we ask or think! Amen.

Now all glory to God, who is able,
through his mighty power at work within us,
to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.
Ephesians 3:20 NLT

All wrapped up

All 3 gf cupcakes in cupcake box!

Wondering whether to share…

One of my fellow MBI alumnae, class of 1976, shared the source of the above quote (thank you, Carole Ehrman):

Corrie ten Boom, Tramp for the Lord.
The whole quote follows:

The wonderful thing about praying is that you leave a world of not being able to do something, and enter God's realm where everything is possible. He specializes in the impossible. Nothing is too great for His almighty power. Nothing is too small for His love.
