[Revised] Christian, Are You Selling Your Soul?

And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? [your life]
Is anything worth more than your soul?
Matthew 16:26 NLT

This was my waking thought today.
And I take my waking thoughts seriously because they are very often God’s message to me.

But how could a Christian “lose their soul”?

The Spirit of God is united with our spirit as believers and so our life is secure in Him. But our soul is our personality (mind, emotions, and will), and we often foolishly chose to live from our fleshly patterns of body and soul in this life on earth. And so then we can lose who God made us to be on this earth…a genuine, unique person with our own personality and gifting.

So what are some of those foolish, soulish ways, even we believers chose to “sell our soul”?

I think there are many. Here are some:

  • striving and achieving in order to gain value

  • becoming what a significant person wants us to be in order to get their love and acceptance

  • climbing the corporate or church or ___________ ladder to gain an identity that people admire

  • making sure we say and do things “right” to earn a significant someone’s approval and/or keep them OK

There are many other ways.

Then Jesus said to his disciples,
“If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it.
But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.
