A Mother's Blessing ... Speaking Truth Over Your Children

The Lord is your protector;
The Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun will not beat down on you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The Lord will protect you from all evil;
He will keep your soul.
The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in
From this time and forever.
Psalm 121: 5-7 NASB

My husband John and I are currently on a long car trip. In the midst of it, we find ourselves heading to a beloved place — Tucson, Arizona. John is an Arizona “native son,” and Tucson is the home of our Alma Mater, the University of Arizona (Go! Wildcats!). In addition to that, back in the 1950’s, Tucson was my family home. So Tucson truly is special to us.

As a child in Tucson — with my two younger sisters

As we drove along on our way into Tucson, the Catalina Rockies came into view. My mind went to a beloved Psalm — Ps 121. It begins,

I will raise my eyes to the mountains;
From where will my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth…

I thought of when our children, Jeremy and Beth, were very young, I used to take car trips with them to New Jersey to visit my family.  It was a l-o-n-g drive from our home in Ohio, so one year we memorized Psalm 121 together as we rode along. To this day, I have fond memories and sweet emotions whenever I read or hear that comforting psalm.

And as I read it again on our way into Tucson, I realized that in the memorizing those many years ago, I was speaking a blessing (or benediction, if you will) over my precious children. In effect, I was saying…

Dear Jeremy and Beth,

The Lord is your protector;
The Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun will not beat down on you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The Lord will protect you from all evil;
He will keep your soul.
The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in
From this time and forever.

So dear Mama-Sisters, why not speak this over your children (and grandchildren), not just on Mother’s Day, but any day. Or turn it into a praise-prayer because HE IS their Protector and Shade, and everything else they might need.

PS. We experienced a special “God-wink” today as we hiked along desert mountain paths. We came across a mama roadrunner sitting on her five baby-eggs. (Zoom in). She is such a great picture of God’s protection and shade and guarding. There is no way she would let us come too close.
